Kidnap Years: The Astonishing True History of the Forgotten Kidnapping Epidemic that Shook Depression-Era America by David Stout (464 pages)

A look at the criminals and crime fighters who waged an epic war of kidnapping and rescue during The Great Depression. From local police forces to the F.B.I. to Congress tried to stem the tide of people being held for ransom. From the children of beer barons to fashion designers to any person off the street this book shows how bananas solving crimes used to be.

City of Sedition: The History of New York City During the Civil War by John Strausbaugh (423 pages)

New York City before and during the Civil War was a city of contrasts. While abolition societies made speeches about the evils of slavery, city officials debated a resolution to succeed from the Union. While the newspapers talked of abolition, the trading floors kept making money in the sale of African slaves. An interesting look at a place not considered a hotbed of rebellion (or a battlefield for armed conflict) but one that shaped the lead up, action, and resolution of the war.

The Nineties: A Book by Chuck Klosterman (384 pages)

The deepest of deep dives into the decade (plus a couple years on both sides) that changed the world. Klosterman goes hard on sports, technology, politics, etc. to show what once was is back again. From the OJ Chase and Trial shaping our modern look at crime and punishment to The Real World changing how (and who) we watched on TV.

The Facemaker: A Visionary Surgeon's Battle to Mend the Disfigured Soldiers of Worl War I by Lindsey Fitzharris (352 pages)

The hard working surgeons and doctors of WWI get the glory in this look at plastic surgery in The Great War. Harold Gillies, in addition to countless other doctors, dentists, nurses, did so much to try and put soldier’s faces back together, sometimes from almost nothing. It’s heartbreaking to read about soldiers who survived the war but their injuries cost them the lives they had beforehand.

The Inventor and the Tycoon: The Murderer Eadwear Muybridge, the Entrepreneur Leland Stanford, and the Birth of Moving Pictures by Edward Ball (464 pages)

If you’re Leland Stanford and for some reason you want to determine if one of your racehorses four hooves are ever in the air all at once, who do you call? Well of course you call Eadweard Muybridge (or is it Edward, or Helios or…or) an eccentric photographic innovator who arranged cameras to provide a moving picture show (hey wait a minute) and answer the question. Oh yeah did I forget to mention that Muybridge also killed a guy??

Keep the Aspidistra Flying by George Orwell (277 pages)

I heard The Profiles in Eccentricity podcast guys talk about this book and it was very enjoyable. Gordon Comstock walks the tightrope of being so unlikeable that he becomes unbearable but in the end manages to come out ahead. He’s a boorish, conceded, egotist who just as you’re about to write off goes out and redeems himself.

Four Days of You and Me by Miranda Kenneally

Summary: "A new swoon-worthy romance following a couple's love story on the same date over four years.

Every May 7, the students at Coffee County High School take a class trip. And every year, Lulu’s relationship with Alex Rouvelis gets a little more complicated. Freshman year, they went from sworn enemies to more than friends after a close encounter in an escape room. It’s been hard for Lulu to quit Alex ever since.

Through breakups, make ups, and dating other people, each year’s class trip brings the pair back together and forces them to confront their undeniable connection. From the science museum to an amusement park, from New York City to London, Lulu learns one thing is for sure: love is the biggest trip of all."

I liked it for the most part, but the ending was meh.

August Books!

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen—the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria—took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire and Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

pages: 719

The story concerns Anne Elliot, a young Englishwoman of 27 years, whose family moves to lower their expenses and reduce their debt by renting their home to an Admiral and his wife. The wife's brother, Captain Frederick Wentworth, was engaged to Anne in 1806, but the engagement was broken when Anne was persuaded by her friends and family to end their relationship. Anne and Captain Wentworth, both single and unattached, meet again after a seven-year separation, setting the scene for many humorous encounters as well as a second, well-considered chance at love and marriage for Anne in her second bloom.

A Special Memoir for a Special Moment in Hollywood History . . .

Some Like It Hot occupies a unique place in American culture. This beloved classic showcases five comic geniuses: Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, I. A. L. Diamond, Billy Wilder, and Marilyn Monroe. It has been honored by the American Film Institute as the "Funniest Film of All Time". It has contributed quotes, styles, and stories to film lore.

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

Pages: 485

"When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy? This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled in with a vengeance when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know..."

Finally going back to re-read this series and finish it this time around. I was intrigued by the "magic" system in this book. Though the Shadowhunters refuse to call it that. The author paints a rich world where the supernatural coexists with the human world, which isn't the most original of ideas, but there is the added Shadowhunters that keep these beings in line that makes this world unique.

Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood

Am I shocked that the female MC is short and tiny and that the male MC is tall and built like a freight train..no. Am I shocked that the two characters refuse to talk to each other and communicate like adults. No. Am I shocked that female MC has the maturity of a middle schooler. Also no.
Yeah I'm really salty about it.... It really took away from my enjoyment of the story, but it's also a sour spot for me.
Someone please hold my coffee while I yell about how we really don't need any more super short girl and super tall guy romances. like.... it's insulting to women and men, because it creates impossible standards for both.
*preface with I recognize that body weight and body image are issues that run rampant in our culture, and that eating disorders and body dysmorphia are a thing, but like....if a novice/untrained man can bench press your weight, why are worrying about being heavy
Can you really call a book a STEMinist if it basically fails the Bechdel test...
Ok so it got slightly better during the second half when there was actually some plot.
Ali....Please....expand your range. Like....please don't write the same story over and over again. But I did love that she had purple hair and tattoos. And there was NASA. and yearning.

The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh

Summary: "Deadly storms have ravaged Mina’s homeland for generations. Floods sweep away entire villages, while bloody wars are waged over the few remaining resources. Her people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curses them with death and despair. In an attempt to appease him, each year a beautiful maiden is thrown into the sea to serve as the Sea God’s bride, in the hopes that one day the “true bride” will be chosen and end the suffering."

The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman

 Pages: 296

"Maus is a haunting tale within a tale. Vladek’s harrowing story of survival is woven into the author’s account of his tortured relationship with his aging father. Against the backdrop of guilt brought by survival, they stage a normal life of small arguments and unhappy visits. This astonishing retelling of our century’s grisliest news is a story of survival, not only of Vladek but of the children who survive even the survivors. Maus studies the bloody pawprints of history and tracks its meaning for all of us."

I am starting banned books week early this year with this difficult yet amazing graphic novel. The author does not hold back in describing the holocaust through his fathers experiences, and the experience of getting the story out of him. This is a book that I wish more people would read. It is so haunting and powerful in telling the duel stories, that of the holocaust survivor and their children trying to make sense of the past.

Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

 Pages: 181

"Sussex, England. A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock, and her mother and grandmother. He hasn't thought of Lettie in decades, and yet as he sits by the pond (a pond that she'd claimed was an ocean) behind the ramshackle old farmhouse, the unremembered past comes flooding back. And it is a past too strange, too frightening, too dangerous to have happened to anyone, let alone a small boy."

I was not expecting how this book turned out. It is so hauntingly nostalgic of childhood and I loved the dash of magic the Hempstock family embodied. It is hard to tell if the story is the vivid imagination of a child processing a family trauma, or some forgotten reality that we can only believe in when we are young. I will definitely be revisiting this book in the future and looking at some of this authors other books.

This Heart of Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

This Heart of Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Molly Somerville's life many not be perfect, but it's pretty close. She loves her cramped little loft, her poodle, and she adores her nieces and nephew. Molly has quite a bit to be happy about ... except her long-term crush on the Chicago Stars quarterback, that awful Kevin Tucker. It might be slightly easier if Molly's sister, Phoebe, didn't manage the Stars. Then she'd never have to see him.

Molly's penchant for trouble boils over, turning her world upside down. Heartbroken and certain things can't get worse, Kevin forces his way back into her life. Molly soon finds Kevin isn't quite as shallow as she had assumed, and his stubborn streak takes them to a picturesque place called Wind Lake. There, Kevin and Molly are forced to battle their growing attraction to each other while dealing with sex-crazed teenaged newlyweds, an aging actress with a link to Kevin, and a crabby, world-renowned artist.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

 Pages: 325

"Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him.... "

My taste usually runs in the sci-fi/high fantasy vein so picking up this mystery thriller is a new experience for me and I have wanted to try a new genre for a while. This definitely kept me reading as bits and pieces of the story were given but did not fit together until the shocking reveal near the end. I did not in any way see what was coming and I read the last bit with my mouth open. I had to stop and think back over the story to see if I could find any hints. The completion of the mystery definitely makes this worth the read.
