Kill the Farm Boy (The Tales of Pell #1)

Kill the Farm Boy (The Tales of Pell # 1)
by Kevin Hearne and Delilah S. Dawson
Pages: 364
Rating: 4 out of 5

This tale appears that is your normal fairy tale but it is not. It's a fun send up of fairy tales, and many science fiction and fantasy characters and novels and even a quest by players in Dungeons and Dragons. It's a fun and irreverent story with a bard, an assassin, a fighter, a witch, a talking goat and other fun characters.

Kiss the Girl by Tara Sivec

Kiss the Girl (The Naughty Princess Club, #3)Kiss the Girl by Tara Sivec
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This whole series is A+. I could read it over and over and over again (and probably will), because it's just that hilarious, raw, emotional, and spicy. Wow!

I have to watch where I am when I'm listening to the audiobooks, because I often just burst out in uncontrollable laughter, which tends to make everyone else in public who can't hear my book look at me like I'm insane. The voice is so fantastic and spot on, and each character is distinct.

Honestly, this series is so delicious that I don't even mind a bit of public humiliation from my inappropriate responses to it. I guarantee that if I play this book, within 5 minutes, I'll be grinning like a hyena, and whatever crap the day has thrown at me will just fade away into the background.

Besides, what's a few weird looks and an angry parent shuffling her children away from me, because of my random book inspired outburst in the middle of the grocery store? Book reactions happen to everyone, people. It's part of life. Just deal with it. Besides, I kind of feel sorry for all those people who were living their boring lives outside of this world, while I was all caught up in it. They're the ones who should be avoided, because you just can't trust people who don't read.

A Tale Dark & Grimm Series by Adam Gidwitz

A Tale Dark & Grimm (A Tale Dark & Grimm, #1)A Tale Dark & Grimm by Adam Gidwitz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I read this book when it was first published, back in my middle school teaching days, and I really enjoyed it. When I saw the entire trilogy was on sale with Audible, I decided to pick them all up and listen again, this time reading the entire series.

This book was clever, charming, and funny, just as I remembered it. It's also filled with some blood and gore and dangerous situations, but it's all told in a way that would still be readable for late elementary or upper middle school, especially considering the approach and tone. In fact, I think my nephew will love this book. He's at that perfect age for understanding the sarcasm and humor in this book.

I like it a lot, and while I think it would be fun for adults to read with the kids in their lives, it's also just fun for adults.

In a Glass Grimmly (A Tale Dark & Grimm, #2)In a Glass Grimmly by Adam Gidwitz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed the second book as much as the first one. This is a good batch of retellings, with lots of humor and intrigue.

The Grimm Conclusion (A Tale Dark & Grimm, #3)The Grimm Conclusion by Adam Gidwitz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I don't love this one quite as much as the first two books, but it is still good. It references the previous books and events too much, in a way that became distracting and seemed like marketing to me. I didn't love that, but the rest of the story was pretty good.

Stars Above by Marissa Meyer

Stars AboveStars Above by Marissa Meyer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you loved the Lunar Chronicles series, you won't want to miss the collection of novellas.

There are 5, brand new, thoroughly enjoyable, complete novellas that present delightful looks at different moments in time for our most beloved characters. This collection also includes the 3 novellas that were previously released for free on WattPad. The different between the 5 and the 3 is that I always felt like all the freebies were good, but 2 of the 3 were teaser novellas and ended abruptly. These 5 new novellas do a better job of standing alone as individual stories, and I really enjoyed that.

Queen of Zombie Hearts by Gena Showalter

A lot of crazy things have happened to Alice since her parents and sister passed away. She has been with on again off again bad-boy Cole and has the ability to kill zombie spirits. Things get crazier when Alice finds out her name is actually Samantha and the mom she thought was her mom was not her real mother. Alice and Cole's group gets together with another pack of slayers (people who can kill zombie spirits) in order to defeat Anima, an institution that has been trying to control zombie spirits. Though this was originally supposed to be the final book in the series, fans begged for more and the author has obliged. The fourth book is to come at the end of September 2015.

Cress by Marissa Meyer

Cress is the third book in the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. It is hard to fully describe what goes on in Cress without providing spoilers, but here it goes. Cress is based on the fairy tale "Rapunzel." Cress (Rapunzel) was placed in a satellite at the age of 10. She has been spying on Earth for the Queen Levana. Cress is torn between helping the queen, who she does not want to help, and helping Cinder and her gang overthrow Queen Levana. A lot of different and exciting things happen. Cress has fallen for Thorne, Cinder is still in love with Emperor Kai, and Scarlet is Wolf's Alpha Female. At the very end, we learn who Winter is, the princess of Lunar. Winter seems to be on the heroes' side, but we will have to wait until November 2015 to find out! :-(

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Scarlet is the second book in the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. It is hard to fully describe what goes on in Scarlet without providing spoilers for Cinder, but here it goes. Scarlet is based on the fairy tale "Little Red Riding Hood." Scarlet and her grandmother own a farm in a small southern town in France. Scarlet's grandmother has been missing for over two weeks. She finds a man to help her find her grandmother who goes by Wolf, a very accurate name. The book goes between what is going on with Scarlet, Cinder, and Kai. Unlike the book Cinder, the book Scarlet does not include as many predictable events. There are still portions of the book that remind one of Little Red Riding Hood, but it is not quite as forced as Cinder. Of course we have a guy named Wolf and Scarlet has a red hoodie and red hair, but once you overlook that, the rest is not as fairy tale-like. It is a very good second book that makes you want to start the third one right away!

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Marissa Meyer puts an amazing and unique spin on the tale of Cinderella in her new book Cinder. Cinder is the first book in the Lunar Chronicles. Cinder is a teenage cyborg who lives in New Beijing. She works as a mechanic, which is the only source of income for her step-mother and two sisters. Her best friend is an android named Echo. Unlike the traditional Cinderella story, Cinder's youngest step-sister is very fond of Cinder. As a bit of background for the setting, it is in a future Earth that had a terrible World War III, Beijing was demolished and therefore, New Beijing was created. There is a group of people called Lunars that live on the moon, and their current queen has been threatening to start war with earth of the prince of the Asian Commonwealth, Prince Kai, will not marry her. There is also a very dangerous plague that has been spreading across the Earth called letumosis. This plague cannot be spread to Lunars. There are certain points in the book that are predictable and others that are surprising. One can definitely tell that Marissa did research on this book to provide well detailed information.
