Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

News that Netherfield Park has been leased by a wealthy young landowner causes a stir in nearby Longbourn, particularly among the Bennet family. Mr. Bingley is instantly drawn to Jane, the eldest of the five Bennet daughters, much to Mrs. Bennet's delight. However, Mr. Bingley's sisters and his good friend, Mr. Darcy, are not pleased with what society has to offer. As they continue to encounter each other at social engagements, Mr. Darcy finds himself rather unwillingly attracted to Jane's sister, Elizabeth, and both Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth must learn the repercussions of hasty and unfair judgments.

I'm Not Charlotte Lucas by Kasey Stockton

ARC: Publication Date: February 7, 2023
I guess I thought when it said in the summary that "life seems to be imitating fiction" it meant that the story was a spin-off....it was not.
Charlie's romance was going to mirror Charlotte's.....
I enjoyed like....80% of the book. It was cute and I loved Liam but then there came a point where I couldn't stand Charlie (probably because she reminded me of myself)
I kind of want to go on a rant about how Charlotte Lucas might have married Mr. Collins for convenience, but like...she was happy... There's nothing wrong with being a Charlotte...like....
Charlie: It's me, I'm the problem.
My brain:

But also, near the end:

Pride and Premeditation by Tirzah Price

Ok but a retelling of Pride and Prejudice, but Lizzie wants to be a barrister. Like...sign me up.
I always love Darcy.
lol they brought up Darcy's first name.
When all the details are revealed. I cackled.
I appreciate that like...they found a way to tell the story while incorporating bits, but also adapted pieces to fit into the moment so that it felt more natural.

Pride by Ibi Zoboi

PridePride by Ibi Zoboi
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a slam poetry remix of Pride and Prejudice, set in Bushwish, a low-income neighborhood in Brooklynn, which is a recipe for success. It's full of fascinating characters, and it sticks closer to the original story than most of the other YA P&P retellings I've read. You'll definitely see the overlaps, and Zuri is a strong MC.

My only complaints are that I would have liked to feel even more invested in the story than I did, especially in the second half, and the relationships fell a bit flat as the story progressed. It was trying so hard to stick to the P&P storyline, that it lost a bit of believability, in terms of the emotion and angst that should have existed. This may have been because of the writing style, which felt it lapsed into too much telling after a time and not enough showing.

Still, it was an interesting read, and a solid attempt at a P&P retelling.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, #1)Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Well, this was amusing, and I don't even need to explain why, since I can just point to the title.

My only request would be for even more zombies.

Now, let's all take a moment to admire that fabulous cover before I go watch the movie.

The Season by Jonah Lisa Dyer & Stephen Dyer

Summary: "When her mother enters her and her twin sister as debutantes for this year's deb season in Dallas, soccer star Megan McKnight is furious. She has no interest the dress-filled life of a socialite deb, but her season turns out to be one full of twists and turns - and more than one dashing suitor!"

I do love a good Pride and Prejudice retelling, and this one was dang near perfect. I appreciated Megan's spirit and spunk, much like Lizzie Bennet's. Her humor and sass were right up my alley. Her story was so strong, that I actually wasn't as invested in the love interest as I usually am. The end of the book was a bit rushed, especially since the first half had such great substance and build-up. I didn't want it to end!

Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James

Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

A real treat. Mystery writer P.D. James loves the works of Jane Austin. Here she blends her skill as an author of mysteries with her love of Pride and Prejudice to craft a beautiful literary mystery.

Set six years after Elizabeth and Darcy marry and are enjoying life at Pemberley, Darcy's magnificent estate, they are planning the annual ball in honor of Darcy's mother, Lady Anne. Close friends have arrived the night before to help with final preparations when Elizabeth's disgraced sister, Lydia arrives in an hysterical state announcing that she is sure her husband Wickham has just been murdered in the woods. As always Jane and Bingley are there to lend support while Darcy tries to shelter his sister Georgiana from any details.

It will take all of Jane and Darcy's wit to find out what has really happened and rescue all the inhabitants of Pemberley from any ensuing scandal.
