Defy the Stars by Claudia Gray

Summary: "Teenaged soldier Noemi and an enemy robot, Abel, who is programmed to obey her commands, set out on an interstellar quest to save her home planet, Earth colony Genesis."

I'm lost as to how to review this book. On one hand, it was thought-provoking and creative and beautiful. On the other hand, it was simultaneously boring and formulaic.  Hm. It could be someone's favorite book, or it could bore a person to tears. The plot's progression seemed to just be checking boxes off a list rather than developing organically. This checklist approach created a lack of surprise and intrigue, which led to predictability and boredom. 

I think Illuminae has it beat in almost every way.
