The Autoimmune Brain: A Five-Step Plan for Treating Chronic Pain, Depression, Anxiety, Fatigue and Attention Disorders

The Autoimmune Brain: A Five-Step Plan for Treating Chronic Pain, Depression, Anxiety, Fatigue and Attention Disorders

by David S. Younger

Pages: 288

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

This is not a book that most people will every word or even every page. Younger goes into great detail describing how the brain should work and how people with autoimmune disorder's brains do not work that way. He not only addresses how changes in the immune system affects and changes the brain, but particularly looks at bacterial, viral ,and parasitic infections and just in time for 2020 and its lingering affects -- traumatic stress both physical and emotional. He also tackles how this all works together with genetics as well. As a reader I definitely no longer felt alone with my long list of symptoms, but with my fuzzy brain, I wasn't able to delve into this book the way I would have liked. I plan to return to it and give it another try.

Detox your Home: A Guide to Removing Toxins from your Life and Bringing Health into your Home

Detox your Home: A Guide to Removing Toxins from your Life and Bringing Health into your Home
by Christine Dimmick
Pages: 240
Stars: 3 out of 5 stars

I read this book because I have so many allergies and I have relatives with other allergies. So, I thought this could make my home a healthier place for all. Some of the author's ideas are practical and there are proven cancer causing agents in some items I had never thought of. But, to remove all of these items from your home would be next to impossible unless you have a bigger budget than mine. There are now companies, such as the one the author founded, that are provided more natural, eco-friendly and health friendly products but they often cost a lot more than others. Still, I am thinking any potentially toxic substance I can replace with a healthier one is a win for me. So, I have been able to confirm so products I thought were safer are, and replace a couple others.

"The Healing Touch: The Proven Massage Program for Dogs and Cats" by Dr. Michael W. Fox

I read this book to learn the correct techniques for massaging my cats.  In addition to being a veterinarian, the author is a trained masseur and transferred what he learned for humans onto our feline and canine companions.  Dr. Fox goes through simplified explanations of the skeletal systems, internal organs, major muscles, and major lymph gland locations, and some of the diagnostic pain points of cats and dogs.  He describes different types of massage, when they should be used, and where.  I've tried some of the techniques on my own cats while they are sitting on my lap to various degrees of success (and failure).  Overall, pet parents will find the book helpful and easy to understand.  151 pages.

"Where Nerves End" by L.A. Witt

Michael Whitman is an acupuncturist in Tucker Springs, CO, where he's helping his ex-wife raise their asthmatic son, but money is tight due to the high cost of living.  Jason Davis is the owner of a nightclub that's barely scraping by, a house that's too big, and a bum shoulder that keeps him up at night in excruciating pain.  When a mutual friend suggests that he see Michael for treatment, Jason reluctantly goes and finds relief.  He also talks Michael into moving in with him to help with the huge mortgage he was left with when his boyfriend moved out.  As the two become friends, Jason's attraction to the straight Michael puts him in emotional agony.  Can they find a way to continue to be friends and roommates without driving Jason crazy?

This was a pretty good story told from Jason's point of view.  Witt described his unrelenting pain so well that the reader can't help but feel for the guy.  His emotional distress was also difficult to read; how much could this man take?  I won't mention more in order not to give away a major spoiler, but I'll just say that I enjoyed the book and wouldn't mind a sequel.  170 pages.

The Science of Skinny by Dee McCaffrey, CDC

Like many other books on good nutrition, the author encourages eating whole foods, organic if possible, including plenty of fruits and veggies.  Most of the book details the damage done to the human body by sugar, flour, food additives and pesticides. Unfortunately the author often takes a preachy tone, and also cites outdated studies.  If the author, who is a registered food and environmental scientist, is to be believed, this is a truly scary title to read just before Halloween.  Be sure to wash your apples before eating to remove the pesticides.  450 pages.
