Tim Reads April

Last Call: A True Story of Love, Lust, and Murder in Queer New York by Elon Green (288 pages)

A look into the investigation and arrest of a serial killer who preyed on gays in New York during the 1970s. This book shows the lack of concern police, DA’s, and the rest of government held for people they didn’t consider to be victims. A hard hitting look at detectives pieced together the case against this vicious murderer

Camera Man: Buster Keaton, the Dawn of Cinema, and the Invention of the Twentieth Century by Dana Stevens (432 pages)

A fascinating look at the life of one of the stars of the early era of Hollywood. Buster Keaton’s rise through Vaduville, silent movies, and later talkies and television provide the bones for the sweeping changes entertainment went through in the 20th century. Buster’s life isn’t as funny as the one he had on screen but this book does a great job fleshing him out and showing how he was able to change along with the rest of Hollywood.

The Man Who Hated Women: Sex, Censorship, and Civil Liberties in the Gilded Age by Amy Sohn (400 pages)

A look at one of the biggest unknown monsters (in my opinion) in American history. Anthony Comstock used his political power to gain sweeping censorship laws against contraception, sexual education, gender equality, and more. He came into contact (and conflict) with Victoria Woodhull, Emma Goldman, and countless other women who felt his wrath

The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm: Tales from Alagaësia

The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm

By Christopher Paolini

Pages: 288

"It's been a year since Eragon departed Alagaësia in search of the perfect home to train a new generation of Dragon Riders. Now he is struggling with an endless sea of tasks: constructing a vast dragonhold, wrangling with suppliers, guarding dragon eggs and dealing with belligerent Urgals and haughty elves. Then a vision from the Eldunarí, unexpected visitors and an exciting Urgal legend offer a much-needed distraction and a new perspective."

This was such a fun little visit to the world of Alagaësia. I have always loved the inheritance series and thoroughly enjoyed a little peek into what some of my favorite characters have been up to. And proves that Christopher Paolini can write a short book!

April Book Dump

A charming and indispensable tour of two thousand years of the written word, Shady Characters weaves a fascinating trail across the parallel histories of language and typography. Whether investigating the asterisk (*) and dagger (†)--which alternately illuminated and skewered heretical verses of the early Bible--or the at sign (@), which languished in obscurity for centuries until rescued by the Internet, Keith Houston draws on myriad sources to chart the life and times of these enigmatic squiggles, both exotic (¶) and everyday (&).

The 1928 explosion that transformed a West Plains dance hall into a raging inferno sparked feverish national media attention and decades of bitterness in the Missouri town it tore apart. And while the story inspired a popular country song, the firestorm that claimed thirty-nine lives remains an unsolved mystery. In this first book on the notorious catastrophe, Lin Waterhouse presents a clear account of the event and its aftermath that judiciously weighs conflicting testimony and deeply respects the personal anguish experienced by parents forced to identify their children by their clothing and personal trinkets.

History has lied.

Anne Boleyn has been sold to us as a dark figure, a scheming seductress who bewitched Henry VIII into divorcing his queen and his church in an unprecedented display of passion. Quite the tragic love story, right?

Wrong.

In this electrifying exposé, Hayley Nolan explores for the first time the full, uncensored evidence of Anne Boleyn’s life and relationship with Henry VIII, revealing the shocking suppression of a powerful woman.

Ruthie Midona will work in Providence’s front office, and be at the Parloni’s beck and call, forever. That’s sort of her life plan. If Ruthie can run the place in her almost-retired bosses’ absence, with no hijinks/hiccups, she has a shot at becoming the new manager. She might also be able to defend her safe little world from Prescott Development, the new buyer of the prime site. Maybe after all that, she can find a cute guy to date. All she needs to do is stay serious—and that’s what she does best.

Until, one day, someone dazzling blows into town.

Teddy Prescott devotes his life to sleeping, tattooing, and avoiding seriousness. When Teddy needs a place to crash, he makes a deal with his developer dad. Teddy can stay in one of Providence’s on-site maintenance cottages—right next door to an unimpressed Ruthie—but only if he works there and starts to grow up.

Ruthie knows how this sweetly selfish rich boy can earn his keep—and be out of her hair in under a week. After all, there is a position vacant…

Anton and Jude angst is just attacking me on a spiritual level.
And I know we hate Anton's brother....but I also kind of love him.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin

By Mark Twain

Pages: 327

"A nineteenth-century boy from a Mississippi River town recounts his adventures as he travels down the river with a runaway slave, encountering a family involved in a feud, two scoundrels pretending to be royalty, and Tom Sawyer's aunt who mistakes him for Tom."

This was book 2 of my classical lit reading challenge that I have started. I remember reading this in school but it wasn't until now that I realized how hilarious it was. Every few chapters was another adventure of Huckleberry and Jim, and it all circles back at the end when we meet Tom and the adventures come to a close with such a sweet ending for everyone.

To Sir Phillip With Love by Julia Quinn

--Just a warning--this is a rant...and also maybe a soap box. There might be spoilers, but also like meh.

Hey it's like The Sound of Music (the trickster children, and the single father who hecka absent but well-meaning, and the girl who comes in) except I don't get to stare at Christopher Plummer for three hours, and instead of Nazis, there's stigmas against mental illness and people who struggle with suicidal thoughts. Oh and women.
Yes. The mentally ill do recognize that they're typically seen as burdens. That's typically what hits them on the head in their brains. But all humans are burdens because that is the inherent nature of being human. Humans take up space.
I just love it when someone says "Your problems don't matter or count or compare to mine because I've suffered more,"
I really wanted to like Phillip... Because there were parts of him that were so good--he cared a lot about his children and he was nerdy--and then he would ruin it by saying something stupid. Maybe I'm just sensitive to depression and suicide for personal reasons, because other people enjoyed the book and thought it was romantic because he's a suffering hero or whatever. I think his first wife suffered more than him.
I recognize that Julia Quinn was trying to "explore mental illness in the time period." I don't think she did it well. She may have "represented" the time period and what mental illness was like, but like...no. It's fiction, so that means that you can treat your characters better than the time period would have.

The Beggar King and the Secret of Happiness

The Beggar King and the Secret of Happiness

By Joel ben Izzy

Pages: 256

"The Beggar King and the Secret of Happiness is that rare, magical book—a book that tells a good story but also shows us how the tales we learned when we were children shed light on our adult lives. Joel ben Izzy had the unusual opportunity to relive those lessons when he lost his voice and reconnected with his old teacher, Lenny, a retired storyteller. Through his meetings with Lenny, Joel rediscovers the wisdom of ancient tales and takes us on a journey into a world of beggars and kings, monks and tigers, lost horses and buried treasures—and in the end tells us the secret of happiness."

I really enjoyed this little memoir. Each chapter started with a short story that was applicable to the chapter of the storytellers life. This book is a reminder to find the happiness in your own story, and that sometimes what seems to be a curse is really a blessing.

This Will All Be Over Soon: A Memoir by Cecily Strong

This Will All Be Over Soon: A Memoir by Cecily Strong

Cecily Strong has a tight bond with her cousins, Owen and Leda. In early 2020, Owen passed away from glioblastoma, leaving Cecily and the rest of her family devastated. When the coronavirus pandemic hit two months later, Cecily was unable to bury herself in work as a cast member at Saturday Night Live. Living in New York City, in the epicenter of the virus, and facing months of isolation with few things to distract her, Cecily absconded to rural Hudson Valley, seeking a way to process her grief. There, trying to make sense of the new life she was facing, Cecily spent months writing, with the result being the diary-like This Will All Be Over Soon.

 The Assassin's Blade

By Sarah J. Maas

Pages: 446

"When Celaena's scheming master, Arobynn Hamel, dispatches her on missions that take her from remote islands to hostile deserts, she finds herself acting independently of his wishes—and questioning her own allegiance. Along the way, she makes friends and enemies alike, and discovers that she feels far more for Sam than just friendship. But by defying Arobynn's orders, Celaena risks unimaginable punishment, and with Sam by her side, he is in danger, too. They will have to risk it all if they hope to escape Arobynn's clutches—and if they fail, they'll lose not just a chance at freedom, but their lives..."

This is a set of five novellas that create a prequel to the Throne of Glass series. I wish I had read these either first or right after the first book as it set up several of the storylines and left off right where the series began. I was using them as a way to wean myself off the universe but I am still wishing for more in this universe.
