Darkest Legacy

Darkest Legacy

By Alexandra Bracken

Pages: 569

"Five years after the destruction of the so-called rehabilitation camps that imprisoned her and countless other Psi kids, seventeen-year-old Suzume "Zu" Kimura has assumed the role of spokesperson for the interim government, fighting for the rights of Psi kids against a growing tide of misinformation and prejudice. But when she is accused of committing a horrifying act, she is forced to go on the run once more in order to stay alive. Determined to clear her name, Zu finds herself in an uncomfortable alliance with Roman and Priyanka, two mysterious Psi who could either help her prove her innocence or betray her before she gets the chance."

I knew the ending to the original trilogy was too good to be true and this book explains that feeling. It was really cool to see Zu's perspective after so long and see her gain the confidence that was stolen from her in the camps. This book really felt like the beginning of a new trilogy with the introduction of new characters, new plot issue, and more for the Psi to fight before they can be accepted. However, I am not getting my hopes up too much since it has been four years since it was published.

In the Afterlight

 In the Afterlight

By Alexandra Bracken

Pages: 544

"Ruby can't look back. Fractured by an unbearable loss, she and the kids who survived the government's attack on Los Angeles travel north to regroup. Only Ruby has any power over him, and just one slip could lead to Clancy wreaking havoc on their minds. They are armed only with a volatile secret: proof of a government conspiracy to cover up the real cause of IAAN, the disease that has killed most of America's children and left Ruby and others like her with powers the government will kill to keep contained. But internal strife may destroy their only chance to free the "rehabilitation camps" housing thousands of other Psi kids."

The Darkest Minds.Never Fade.In the After Light. I love how the titles combine together to form this sentence that shows some hope for the kids. This final part of the trilogy started a little slow but the grand finale made up for it. The ending is so bittersweet and filled with hope. Everyone came back together at the end and I was excited to see the whole gang together. I still have some questions but I am hoping the fourth book, which seems more like a continuation on a different characters story, will wrap everything else up.

Never Fade

Never Fade

 By Alexandra Bracken

Pages: 513

"Ruby never asked for the abilities that almost cost her her life. Now she must call upon them on a daily basis, leading dangerous missions to bring down a corrupt government and breaking into the minds of her enemies. Other kids in the Children’s League call Ruby “Leader”, but she knows what she really is: a monster. When Ruby is entrusted with an explosive secret, she must embark on her most dangerous mission yet: leaving the Children’s League behind."

Favorite quote from this book: “Oh, I'm sorry," Chubs said, 'apparently the middle of my sentence interrupted the beginning of yours. Do continue.” The character interactions in this book was phenomenal. I really enjoyed the development of characters in this book but the ending had me in tears. I am not sure how I feel about the revelation at the end, I like the characters the way they are and the secrets revealed could change alot.

Darkest Minds

 Darkest Minds

By Alexandra Bracken

Pages: 488

"When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control."

I haven't read a sci-fi in a while and this one follows the dystopian hype that followed Hunger Games. I did enjoy the start to the series, but it did drag in pacing at the start. However, the twists and dialog made up for the pacing and the ending broke my heart. I fell in love with the characters that join Ruby and am intrigued to learn more about the political side plot that is starting.

Goddess in the Machine by Lora Beth Johnson

Andro: I need an adult. A more adult adult. Are than any adults here.
ok but now I'm thinking of the Road to El Dorado, even though Andro doesn't want to be a goddess.
I love that the story addressed how language would change as time passed. I feel like I should have guessed the plot twists...not because they're obvious but like...
I'm interested to see how they resolve everything...because like....
The future of earth and how the mission went.

Mirage by Somaiya Daud

Ok but how the atmosphere feels like a fantasy and like old times, but it's also in space and is in the future.
There was an interview with the author in the audiobook, and like, it made me love the premise more, because of how like.... religion and culture are integrated into a society and viewed as other, and how things would progress in the future.
But also like. Language and poetry and literature. and gahhh.
The ship. I'm worried bad things will happen, but I love this ship.

Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

So it's like...a retelling of the origins of the Tang dynasty, but it's in the future, and not everything is accurate, and there's fighting robots (did my brain think of Voltron--yes)
Me appreciating the content notice at the beginning of the book. chef's kiss.

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski

There's a lot of trippy stuff going on here and it's really hard to come up with a summary that gets everything but as simply as possible:

A man named Zampano dies and the new tenant of his apartment, Johnny Truant, finds a chest containing thousands of documents about a documentary called The Navidson Record. Johnny starts compiling all of Zampano's notes and writing together to create House of Leaves.

In the second storyline of The Navidson Record, we get the story of the Navidson family who move into a new home to find that it's starts becoming bigger on the inside than the outside, random closets show up out of nowhere, and a hallway suddenly appears that leads to a seemingly different dimension where walls move and staircases appear and disappear.

This book both fascinated and infuriated me. I didn't find it at all scary like it was said to be, but it was equally interesting and weird, which kept me going to the end.

 My Best Friend's Exorcism

Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fifth grade, when they bonded over a shared love of E.T., roller-skating parties, and scratch-and-sniff stickers. But when they arrive at high school, things change. Gretchen begins to act….different. And as the strange coincidences and bizarre behavior start to pile up, Abby realizes there’s only one possible explanation: Gretchen, her favorite person in the world, has a demon living inside her. And Abby is not about to let anyone or anything come between her and her best friend. With help from some unlikely allies, Abby embarks on a quest to save Gretchen. But is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?

All I can say is...I guess so?

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

Aiden Bishop knows the rules. Evelyn Hardcastle will die every day until he can identify her killer and break the cycle. But every time the day begins again, Aiden wakes up in the body of a different guest at Blackheath Manor. And some of his hosts are more helpful than others.

This book was awesome! Great all the way through.

The Exorcist

A desperate mother and two priests fight to free the soul of a little girl from a supernatural entity of pure malevolence.

Captain Howdy indeed. Good story, but not as scary as I imagine. I'm chalking it up to the fact I've seen the movie, there's too much hype and that I'm pretty sure I'm desensitized to most horror now.

"In a crowd of thousands" Really Ashley? did you seriously...
I love Anastasia retellings.
I wish I had re-read the first book (because it's been like 9 months) because I'm confused, but I don't care. And I think I could have enjoyed the relationships more

Glow by Amy Kathleen Ryan

so like.....can these boys please stop being boys... like...I think this is the sign that I can't read about high school students in love triangles anymore...because I just... they toxic. They both are awful, and they're awful to each other.
I'm getting a rage headache because they are not valuing the human person for their inherent dignity and I wanna start a fight because consent is important and also. no.
I really hope that this series doesn't villainize religion...because like...it's the people that are crap...
Hears a character leaving important bits out of the bible to make a point: that is not correct.
