Shades of Wicked (Night Rebel #1). By Jeaniene Frost, Narrator: Tavia Gilbert.

Shades of Wicked (Night Rebel #1). By Jeaniene Frost, Narrator: Tavia Gilbert. 2018. HarperAudio. ISBN-13: 9780062695628 (Unabridged audiobook, 8 hrs, 51 mins).

Wit and sexy times meet high stakes as Ian and Veritas hunt down a demon who has done them both wrong.

A fan of vampires? Definitely read this wildly entertaining installment in the Night Huntress world, but first; go read Vlad and Leila’s Night Prince series (Don’t worry, it’s an excellent series). Why? The Night Rebel is a spin off and the main plot point of Shades of Wicked began and was left hanging in Into the Fire (Night Prince #4).

Wicked Bite (Night Rebel #2). By Jeaniene Frost.

Wicked Bite (Night Rebel #2). By Jeaniene Frost. 2020. Avon. ISBN-13: 9780062695635 (Paperback).

Wicked Bite picks up where Shades of Wicked left off. Book #1 set a high bar and Frost delivers on the action, suspense, Ian’s one-liners, and of course, the sexy times. But Veritas’s internal monologues about her past and half-demigod nature did make it feel like those parts of the book could have been tightened up.

I had expected this book to wrap up the series, but a new plot line came to visit Veritas at the end and I’m looking forward to next adventure for these two crazy kids.

Hero’s Haven (Dark Protectors #11). By Rebecca Zanetti.

Hero’s Haven (Dark Protectors #11). By Rebecca Zanetti. 2020. Lyrical Press (ARC eBook).

For centuries, vampire-demon hybrid, Quade Karys, has been in another dimension, far away from Earth and his family. As a member of The Seven, his purpose was to keep a dangerous enemy imprisoned within a pocket between worlds. But just as Quade feels his body and mind failing and succumbing to delusions of a beautiful woman that visits him, the dimension collapses. He is saved by his beautiful stranger by traveling back to Earth through a portal of her creation. Now, he and Haven Daly are being are being pursued by Ulric’s followers, who want to use Haven’s abilities to return Ulric to Earth.

Quade’s reintegration into a world he has long been parted from leads to some humorous scenes, especially his discovered fondness for eating mint toothpaste. And as the two search for the surviving members of Quade’s family, Haven discovers that she is a part of a world she never knew existed; one that has vampires, demons, shifters, fae and more. All the while, the two of them have to adjust to each other and Haven is as stubborn as Quade is overprotective.

The world Zanetti has created is full of action, romance and humor that will keep readers coming back to this series.

Dark Alpha’s Temptation (Reaper #9). By Donna Grant.

Dark Alpha’s Temptation (Reaper #9). By Donna Grant. 2020. St. Martin’s Paperbacks (ARC eBook).

Grant's Reaper series features a brotherhood of dark and light fae, who work as Death’s assassins, and the women who win over their stoic hearts.

As I have only read book #2 and book #4 leading up to Temptation, I would recommend reading the series in order, and especially not to skip book #8. Right away it is referenced that A LOT has happened in between #4 and #9, with book #8 ending a major part of the over-arching plot and players. Aside from Kyra and Dubhan’s story, Temptation sets up the next big threat; the Others, an old and mysterious group prejudiced against the protectors of the human realm, the dragon kings. At one point, the book drags heavily with exposition, but Grant’s mix of mythology and ever changing politics in her paranormal world can be appreciated.

Still, there are a lot of tie-ins with Grant’s other series, of which I’ve not read, and it can get a bit overwhelming. But Duban is my favorite reaper to date and that is what basically kept me in the story. Like with Kyran and Fintan, he has no real familial ties except with the brotherhood, and that leads to internal conflict that he would rather leave buried, but in order to protect Krya, has to confront. More than with the other reapers and their heroines, Dubhan seems to soften around Krya a bit more and I liked that because the romances in this series seems to unfold rather rapidly. Overall, it’s an enjoyable read that will have fans wanting to see what comes next now that the Others are in the mix.

Wicked Cowboy Wolf (Seven Range Shifters #3). By Kait Ballenger.

Wicked Cowboy Wolf (Seven Range Shifters #3). By Kait Ballenger. 2020. Sourcebooks Casablanca (ARC ebook).
Years ago a young Jared Black was cast from the Grey Wolf pack for a crime he took the fall for. Surviving the years that followed shaped the boy into a hardened criminal. As the leader of misfit wolves, he is known only as Rogue, and he is now offering a solution to the oncoming vampire threat to Maeve Gray, the sister of the Grey Wolf pack's alpha. All she has to do is ally herself with the mysterious wolf with as many scars on his soul as his body.

A new author and series for me, Ballenger delivers a story full of banter, misfits, secrets, chemistry and an ornery pet pig. I will be picking up more books in this series. Fans of paranormal romance and shifters will enjoy the protective alpha hero and feisty heroine in Wicked Cowboy Wolf.

While I think this romance can be read as a standalone, it is important to note that it is the third book in the series and involves an overall threat and story arc to the series’ plot.

The Last Wolf by Maria Vale

The Last Wolf

I have never read a paranormal romance before. I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did! Silver is a crippled runt, at the bottom of her pack's hierarchy with little chance of moving up. When she decides to help a shifter-someone who isn't subject to the Iron Moon's forced changes-everything changes for herself and the pack. The world building is impressive, and Vale does a good job of creating a believable werewolf culture set in backwoods America.

This book may lead me to try some more paranormal romance!

Wolf Rebel (SWAT #10). By Paige Tyler.

Wolf Rebel (SWAT #10). By Paige Tyler. 2019. Sourcebooks Casablanca (ARC eBook).

Police officer Rachel Bennett has had a rough go of it in the past year. Brutally injured by a crazed man while responding to a dispatch call in a graveyard in the middle of the night, she recovers only to discover that the close call triggered her transformation into a werewolf. Now she’s a member of the Dallas Police Department’s Special Wolf Alpha Team (SWAT), a division made up of werewolves, and her latest assignment is working a protection detail for an Assistant District Attorney. Plagued by nightmares, strange smells and hallucinations of her attacker, Rachel hopes work will be enough to distract her from her mental crisis, but then she learns that she’ll be working alongside Knox Lawson, and her troubles multiply.

This is new author and series to me. Wolf Rebel is the 10th installment of SWAT, but can be read as a standalone well enough. While there is the standard paranormal fare of fated mates and enemies to lovers, Rachel and Knox’s story switches it up by having her, a relative novice at being a werewolf, training an even newer werewolf in Knox. Wolf Rebel delivers two people pulled together against all odds, but it is more heavy on the action than the romance, and there are some creepy moments where Rachel’s past comes back to haunt her that adds an element of suspense as well as an interesting look into Tyler’s supernatural world. Overall, an action-packed and entertaining read with a bit of steam on the side.

Eternal Kiss of Darkness (Night Huntress World #2). By Jeaniene Frost, Narrator: Tavia Gilbert.

Eternal Kiss of Darkness (Night Huntress World #2). By Jeaniene Frost, Narrator: Tavia Gilbert. 2010. Blackstone Audiobooks. ISBN: 9781481587594. (Unabridged audiobook, 10 hours, 25 mins).

“Save one life” is the mission Chicago private investigator Kira Graceling lives by. So when she hears an assault taking place in a warehouse on her walk home, she responds; only to walk into a nightmare.

As a Master vampire dating back to the Egyptian pharaohs, Mencheres thought he had seen it all, until a fearless human woman attempts to rescue him from death at the hands of ghouls. Saving her instead, he discovers he that she is a liability as long as he is unable to wipe the events from her mind. He decides to keep Kira close, but Mencheres hasn’t survived so long without making enemies and when they redouble their efforts in destroying him by targeting her, he must challenge his fate--the eternal darkness that awaits him.

Eternal Kiss of Darkness picks up after Spade and Denise’s story, First Drop of Crimson (Night Huntress World #1), and is followed by Night Huntress #5. While Mencheres’ and Kira’s story is a stand-alone, Night Huntress #3 and #4 does lay out the groundwork for Menchere’s mindset and standing with his compatriots. Overall a great listen that pays off for one of the more intriguing characters in this world.

First Drop of Crimson (Night Huntress World #1). By Jeaniene Frost, Narrator: Tavia Gilbert.

First Drop of Crimson (Night Huntress World #1). By Jeaniene Frost, Narrator: Tavia Gilbert. 2010. Blackstone Audiobooks. ISBN: 9781481587310 . (Unabridged audiobook, 10 hours, 6 mins).
When Denise MacGregor befriended vampire hunter, Cat Crawford, she was introduced to the world of vampires, ghosts and ghouls. But when her husband was killed by zombies in an attack orchestrated to kill Cat’s husband, Bones; Denise withdrew from Cat’s world. But now she and her family are in grave danger from a shape-shifting demon, so she reaches out to Spade, a centuries-old vampire, and requests he help her. Spade’s honor impels him to aid Denise at first, but he soon discovers he has no desire of leaving her side. Together, they must unravel the secrets of the demonic bond that threatens her life.

First Drop of Crimson is the first installment of Frost’s Night Huntress World novels (set in the Night Huntress universe but are dedicated, full-length, single novels featuring new couples that are not Cat and Bones). The author’s recommended reading order places this title between Night Huntress #4 and #5; and this is the order I am following, but I think this title can be considered a stand-alone as the main highlights for Denise are revisited and up to this point, very little is known about Spade.

So far, I’m not a fan of Cat and Bones, but my interest in the world and desire to learn more about the secondary vampires has me working through the recommended reading order so that I don’t miss anything about Spade, Mencheres, Ian, and especially Vlad. I very much liked Spade and Denise’s story. Their steadfast natures help each other overcome Denise’s PTSD episodes and Spade’s fear of losing a mortal mate. Overall, an entertaining and steamy narrated read that will appeal to readers of vampire and paranormal fiction.

Slave to Sensation (Psy/Changeling #1). By Nalini Singh, Narrator: Angela Dawe.

Slave to Sensation (Psy/Changeling #1). By Nalini Singh, Narrator: Angela Dawe. 2014. Tantor Media, Inc. ISBN: 978145622019 (Unabridged audiobook, 9 hours 38 mins).

This series is set in the future where the human race has developed into three distinct groups: Human, Psy, and Changeling. Psy have enhanced psychic abilities at the cost of erasing their emotions through the conditioning protocol Silence. The Psy Council totes Silence as being the vehicle that curtailed violence in Psy society. They dominate the political, business and economic sectors and if something untoward happens, well then, it must be the Humans or shape-shifting Changelings to blame.

When several Changeling women are brutally murdered, black panther Changeling and Alpha of the Dark River Leopard Pack, Lucas Hunter, believes the killer is Psy. With the hope of gaining access to the Psy Council’s most protected secrets he forges a business relationship with a Cardinal Psy, Sascha Duncan. Slowly, Lucas’s sensual heat melts Sascha’s icy exterior and together they begin to scratch away the placid surface of Silence and the Net Mind and find the depths more sinister than they ever imagined.

Slave to Sensation has depth and complexity in the world and characters. Singh is a strong writer and Dawe is an adept narrator.

Visions of Heat (Psy/Changeling Series #2). By Nalini Singh, Narrator: Angela Dawe.

Visions of Heat (Psy/Changeling Series #2). By Nalini Singh, Narrator: Angela Dawe. 2014. Tantor Media, Inc. ISBN: 9781452622002 (Unabridged audiobook, 9 hours 43 mins).

Picking up where Slave to Sensation leaves off, Faith Nightstar is an F-Psy, a foreseer, and she is dreaming of murders. Troubled by her dreams, she sets out to find the only Psy she believes can help her, Sascha Duncan, who is now branded a Psy-traitor and living with the Dark River Changelings. It isn’t easy-going for Faith as F-Psys are rare and valued so highly by Psy elite that they are raised in controlled, isolated environments, in conjunction with their Silence programming. As a result, she doesn’t fare well with others who are not Psy, especially Vaughn D’Angelo. Vaughn is Dark River’s Sentinel, the Alpha’s Second-In-Command, and while his jaguar nature keeps him quiet and solitary, his deadly presence alone is overwhelming to Faith.

Silence remains an overarching plot and more is revealed about machinations within the Psy Council, as well as the other side of the Net Mind, the Dark Net. There is a Minority Report vibe from the top down concerning Psy society. The Snow Dancer Wolf Pack also makes a reappearance. Overall, solid writing and narration. That it is the heroine who has to learn to feel emotions instead of the hero puts a spin on the typical romance story; so if you liked that direction in Kresley Cole’s No Rest for the Wicked, then give Visions of Heat a read for a different take on it.

Kissed by a Dark Prince (Eternal Mates #1). By Felicity Heaton.

Kissed by a Dark Prince (Eternal Mates #1). By Felicity Heaton. 2013. Felicity Heaton. ASIN: B00GSQJNJO (Kindle).

Injured and left disoriented in the human realm by his enemy, Loren unknowingly initiates a bond between himself and the beautiful woman he bites in an attempt to heal himself. The existence of such a bond reveals Olivia as Loren’s eternal mate, but with his kingdom under threat, the dark elf prince decides that he has found her at a most inopportune time.

As a research scientist at the demon-hunting organization Archangel, Olivia would rather study the dark elf than risk her heart. Not willing to pull Olivia into the crossfire of his ancient feud in the fae realm, Loren agrees to work with her in order to find a way to break the bond. Too bad fate has other plans for them.

Heaton’s first installment in the Eternal Mates series has the promising beginnings of intricate world building and mythology. The secondary characters are also woven into the story well, with set ups for their own stories that do not feel tacked on. I look forward to the rest of the series.

by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl

Ethan Wate used to think of Gatlin, the small Southern town he had always called home, as a place where nothing ever changed. A Gatlin where impossible, magical, life-altering events happen.

Sometimes life-ending.

Aisling Grey, Guardian Series by Katie MacAlister

I needed something light after Clash of Kings and turned to my favorite paranormal romance series. The books are fast-paced and funny, especially scenes with the demon-lite, Newfoundland dog named Jim (or Effrijim if you want to be technical). The series follows her entrance into the "Otherworld," coming into her powers as a Guardian and demon lord, and falling in love with a hunky dragon named Drake.

Everneath by Brodi Ashton

Everneath (Everneath, #1)Everneath by Brodi Ashton
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Nope. This was absolutely not for me.

With writing, there’s diving right into the action to grab everyone’s attention in a good way, and then there is diving right into the middle of something too fast without making the world, parameters, and situations clear enough for the reader to easily follow along. This book falls into the second category, and while I applaud that it wanted to grab my attention right from the start and power forward with only the most relevant action, it fell short of being clear and cohesive, so the start was rocky, which meant it actually took me longer to settle in and become invested in this one.

I initially thought this was a decent read, but that opinion degraded the longer I read. The transitions between sections and scenes feels rough and too abrupt at times. Sentences are often very clipped, which makes this book a hard to listen to. It also was hard to remember the information presented, and because I had to interrupt myself at chapter 7 to finish up three other books, I had to go back and start this book over again when I returned to it after only a 4 day break from it (as nothing stuck out or stuck with me).

Once I restarted it, I fared slightly better. I think the best solution for new readers would be to block out a decent amount of time to read and get fully invested in this story before you put it down for the first time, so that you don’t risk getting confused, or irritated, and becoming unwilling to return to it.

For someone who lived 100 years in the underworld, this MC feels pretty immature, not to mention Mr. 1000 years old. And seriously? She pined for some old boyfriend for all 100 years? I’m the queen of hanging on long past the point in which you should in regards to feelings and relationships, but even I draw the line well before a decade, let alone a century. While her voice may be appropriate for YA, something about this whole setup rang false for me.

Plus, her old boyfriend is just all kinds of boring. Meh. No thanks. I still do not even understand why she is obsessed with him, or why he even loves her, and the side characters have very little depth. I can barely even tell them apart. Most of the character development is weak, and there is no real character growth.

Also, most of the mythology is shared through long-winded sections of telling, which is about the most boring way ever to hear it, especially when the majority of it all seems to come at the end of the book, which is way too late to be interesting or relevant.

I have read far better YA paranormal novels about the underworld (Give me Sarah Fine, or give me Death—preferably both), so I don’t plan to continue on in the series. Honestly, I was ecstatic when this finally ended. I think at the end of the day, it just feels more contrived than authentic, and that made me hold the book at an arm’s length, rather than want to pull it close and get invested in the characters.

The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld #1)

The Darkest Night (Lords of the Underworld #1)The Darkest Night by Gena Showalter
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Meh. I just couldn’t with this one. If the first book is the absolute worst book in the series, and it gets better (a lot better), someone let me know. Otherwise, I won’t be continuing on with this.

To me, this was silly, shallow, and not even remotely dark, despite the enticing dark concept. It’s a concept that sounded great on paper, but when written in such a frilly, shallow way, it took away everything that should have been great about this.

This could have been deep, dark, angst-filled, and emotional. Instead, what you get is 2D characters, a plot that is only there to forward the romance, underdeveloped side characters, shallow and lazy villains, and weak world building. Honestly, I’m most upset about the weak world building and boring, one-note characters.

Yes, this is fiction, but you’ll have to suspend disbelief to an ultimate level to be able to swallow the lazy dialogue and plot.

And I take it back. I’m most upset that this is a high concept failure, because there’s just so much that could have been done with this dark, demon-filled world. And instead, I got a bunch of annoying, emotionless fluff. Bummer.
