Darkest Legacy

Darkest Legacy

By Alexandra Bracken

Pages: 569

"Five years after the destruction of the so-called rehabilitation camps that imprisoned her and countless other Psi kids, seventeen-year-old Suzume "Zu" Kimura has assumed the role of spokesperson for the interim government, fighting for the rights of Psi kids against a growing tide of misinformation and prejudice. But when she is accused of committing a horrifying act, she is forced to go on the run once more in order to stay alive. Determined to clear her name, Zu finds herself in an uncomfortable alliance with Roman and Priyanka, two mysterious Psi who could either help her prove her innocence or betray her before she gets the chance."

I knew the ending to the original trilogy was too good to be true and this book explains that feeling. It was really cool to see Zu's perspective after so long and see her gain the confidence that was stolen from her in the camps. This book really felt like the beginning of a new trilogy with the introduction of new characters, new plot issue, and more for the Psi to fight before they can be accepted. However, I am not getting my hopes up too much since it has been four years since it was published.

In the Afterlight

 In the Afterlight

By Alexandra Bracken

Pages: 544

"Ruby can't look back. Fractured by an unbearable loss, she and the kids who survived the government's attack on Los Angeles travel north to regroup. Only Ruby has any power over him, and just one slip could lead to Clancy wreaking havoc on their minds. They are armed only with a volatile secret: proof of a government conspiracy to cover up the real cause of IAAN, the disease that has killed most of America's children and left Ruby and others like her with powers the government will kill to keep contained. But internal strife may destroy their only chance to free the "rehabilitation camps" housing thousands of other Psi kids."

The Darkest Minds.Never Fade.In the After Light. I love how the titles combine together to form this sentence that shows some hope for the kids. This final part of the trilogy started a little slow but the grand finale made up for it. The ending is so bittersweet and filled with hope. Everyone came back together at the end and I was excited to see the whole gang together. I still have some questions but I am hoping the fourth book, which seems more like a continuation on a different characters story, will wrap everything else up.

Never Fade

Never Fade

 By Alexandra Bracken

Pages: 513

"Ruby never asked for the abilities that almost cost her her life. Now she must call upon them on a daily basis, leading dangerous missions to bring down a corrupt government and breaking into the minds of her enemies. Other kids in the Children’s League call Ruby “Leader”, but she knows what she really is: a monster. When Ruby is entrusted with an explosive secret, she must embark on her most dangerous mission yet: leaving the Children’s League behind."

Favorite quote from this book: “Oh, I'm sorry," Chubs said, 'apparently the middle of my sentence interrupted the beginning of yours. Do continue.” The character interactions in this book was phenomenal. I really enjoyed the development of characters in this book but the ending had me in tears. I am not sure how I feel about the revelation at the end, I like the characters the way they are and the secrets revealed could change alot.

Darkest Minds

 Darkest Minds

By Alexandra Bracken

Pages: 488

"When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control."

I haven't read a sci-fi in a while and this one follows the dystopian hype that followed Hunger Games. I did enjoy the start to the series, but it did drag in pacing at the start. However, the twists and dialog made up for the pacing and the ending broke my heart. I fell in love with the characters that join Ruby and am intrigued to learn more about the political side plot that is starting.

1984

1984

By George Orwell

Pages: 298

"Winston Smith works for the Ministry of truth in London, chief city of Airstrip One. Big Brother stares out from every poster, the Thought Police uncover every act of betrayal. When Winston finds love with Julia, he discovers that life does not have to be dull and deadening, and awakens to new possibilities. Despite the police helicopters that hover and circle overhead, Winston and Julia begin to question the Party; they are drawn towards conspiracy. Yet Big Brother will not tolerate dissent - even in the mind. For those with original thoughts they invented Room 101 . . ."

What started as a political satire has turned into a terrifying novel as I found several parallels between the dystopian universe that Orwell created and our own. Its amazing that this novel was published in 1948 and had many of its themes line up with societal trends.

Reboot by Amy Tintera

I mean...couldn't you technically call this a zombie book because she was dead for 178 minutes...because it gives me zombie vibes.
And then there's The Host vibes.
ok ok ok. I like Amy's fantasy better...

Well, I Lied. Just One More Final Post:

Delirium (Delirium, #1)Delirium by Lauren Oliver
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I read this book the first year it was published, which I think was about 8 years ago. I found the premise very interesting, but somehow, I never got back around to reading the other books in this series, which is now my plan.

This was a great starting point. I’m hoping I love book 2 even more. It had a dramatic ending, which I remembered (remembered that it was dramatic, not the specifics of the ending), so I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next.

Annabel (Delirium, #0.5)Annabel
by Lauren Oliver

My rating:
3 of 5 stars

I enjoyed the background information on mom. It doesn’t always all add up, but it was still interesting.

Alex (Delirium, #1.1)Alex by Lauren Oliver
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This one was just okay. Not much actually happened, and we got more of Alex. However, he almost felt like a completely different character than he was in Delirium. Granted, this novella finds him in the middle of hard circumstances. But something felt off for me.

Also, he talks about all these moments with Lena that make it seem like they had far more time together and learning about each other during book one than they actually did. I just found some of it confusing, as if suddenly they were two different people in totally different spots than I thought they were in. Maybe after I read book 2, this one will start to feel less unnatural.
