This novel opens with the birth of pit bull puppies which
15-year old Esch compares to the birth of her youngest brother which took the
life of their mother. Esch also finds
comparisons with her life and that of Jason and Medea from Edith Hamilton’s
Mythology that she is reading in her high school English class.
Esch lives with her
three brothers and her father in a neighborhood of Bous Salvage, MS called the
“Pit.” There’s a lot that’s depressing about their life of grinding poverty but
as Hurricane Katrina bears down on the “Pit”, the bonds of family do not/will
not break.
