Brunetti is called upon to help with an investigation into illegal trash dumping and trade in hazardous substances. What has him truly baffled is a request from his father-in-law to help with a business decision. Though they get on well enough, they don't really talk to each other much. The two problems turn out to be related, and Brunetti solves both, though he doesn't actually catch the criminal. Not that it matters much. The government agencies involved are corrupt and will simply swap out one crime family for another. All this against the backdrop of Venice in Winter.
