Ellie Cavanaugh, an investigative reporter for an Atlanta
newspaper, is on her way to Westchester County, New York to appear at a parole
hearing for Rob Westerfield. Westerfield
was convicted of killing Ellie’s sister, Andrea, twenty-three years ago.
Westerfield is paroled in spite of Ellie’s protests.
Ellie is convinced he is dangerous, and may kill again. His
wealthy family has hired a writer to write a book white-washing him, and
purporting to prove his innocence. So Ellie sets out to write her own book,
proving that he really did kill her sister. In the process, she uncovers
evidence of other crimes he committed, and in doing so puts her own life in danger.
This book is written in first person, unusual for Mary
Higgins Clark, and it is an effective technique to freshen her writing. It is as suspenseful as some of her earlier books.
