Orcadia House, a country house in a city setting has worn well with time, but the latest owners are in for a shock when not one but four bodies are discovered in the base of the old coal delivery pit off the patio. Inspector Wexford is easily coaxed out of retirement to assist with the inquiry, and as usual, follows a twisting trail of witnesses and other players to get to the bottom, so to speak, of the story.
