Bod, an unusual boy, is the only living resident of a
graveyard. The man Jack is sent to slit
the throats of an entire family. But the
18-month-old baby climbs out of his
crib, finds the door open, and toddles off to the graveyard. The graveyard’s
ghostly residents, realizing that the baby is orphaned, adopt him, name him ‘Nobody’,
and allow him to live in their tomb. The graveyard’s denizens teach him life lessons, and a solitary
guardian, Simon (who ‘belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the
dead’), makes sure that he receives food, books, and anything else he might
need from the human world. There are
dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy. But if Bod leaves the
graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack—who has already
killed Bod's family . .
Our book club read this book several years ago. I didn’t
want to read it, but found that I actually really enjoyed it. I re-read it when
the book blog challenge included points for Gaiman books, and enjoyed it just
as much the second time around.
The Graveyard Book won the Newbery Medal and
the Carnegie Medal and is a Hugo Award Winner for Best Novel.
