One aspect of this novel is a story of alien contact. We observe a sign of intelligence, we investigate, and that action comes back to haunt us. The aliens have now seen us, and are intent on taking the worlds we control and eliminating the human competition. There is much more to this novel and it's impossible to summarize in a few lines, but Hamilton brought these new worlds and their societies to life for me. Now I'll just need to find a copy of the sequel, Judas Unchained, to find out how it all ends, and I look forward to reading further works by Hamilton.
