When Darra is 8 years old, her father carjacks a van. He
doesn’t know that Wren, an 8-year-old girl, is hiding in the back. Darra hears about the carjacking on the news,
and wonders where Wren could be. She
thinks Wren may be in their garage, so she leaves food for her, but never sees
her. She tries to figure out a way to
help Wren get away. After a couple of days, Wren manages to escape, and she is
able to lead the police to the house where she had been. Darra’s father goes to
prison.
When the girls are 14, they both end up in the same camp, in
the same cabin. Talk about an awkward situation! They ignore each other as long
as they can, but eventually have to decide whether to hold on to the resentment
(Darra blaming Wren for her Dad going to prison, and Wren blaming Darra’s for
her father’s actions), or put it aside and become friends.
