"Hearts of Gold" by Hollis Shiloh
I've read several stories by this author and enjoyed this one as I have the others. Kale is a dragon slayer as he was raised to be since infancy. His best friend, Holin, was also to be a dragon slayer but was unexpectedly afflicted with the ability to perform magic when he was a teenager. Labeled a demon, he was abjured from the slayer academy, the only home he'd ever known. Kale was too afraid to stand up for him, so he lost the person he loved most in the world. Years later, Kale is a true dragon slayer with only one more golden dragon heart to present to the academy to earn his freedom. Upon retrieving number five, he stops at an inn for the night and is surprised to see Holin for the first time since his banishment. Can he still perform magic? Where has he been all this time? Will he ever forgive Kale for his cowardice with the academy? This was a touching and action filled love story with several twists, but it could've used better editing. I still liked it, though. 176 pages (Kindle edition).
