This book picks up immediately from where, A Discovery of Witches left off. Diana and Matthew travel back in time to Elizabethan London where they meet famous literary and historical figures. It would be an amazing trip for Diana except for the spies and Matthew's past creating a web of danger all around them. Diana continues to seek out a witch who can tutor her, without drawing attention to her magical powers - this is the time of witch hunts and the Inquisition.
Clues to the whereabouts of Ashmole 782 lead them on on a dark and dangerous journey.
