Susan Rose works as a
housemaid in Victorian England, until she finds herself ‘with child’, but
without husband. Her father, who is very unhappy to lose the income he receives
from her wages, sells her baby. Her mother is a wet nurse, and Susan becomes
one also, even while harboring thoughts of finding her child.
She is determined and
gutsy, and manages to work her way into the graces of a number of ‘ladies’ who
need wet nurses, all the while keeping her ears open for any tidbit of
information that will lead her to her son.
This is a light, engaging
read for a wintry weekend.
